Software Selection

Get your business process right first.

Before approaching the process of selecting software or hardware it is important to look carefully at your organisation’s business processes. This is the time to firstly be clear how they currently work, and most importantly to re-engineer them using the latest information systems thinking and in a way that supports the business strategy.

Software vendors are often guilty of giving insufficient time to this process, their concern is get the sale, as soon as possible.

Don’t allow the software vendor to specify your system.

This is likely to fail for three reasons:

  1. They are likely to over specify the solution resulting in expensive, over complicated systems that can be difficult to maintain.

  2. Software vendors are strong in technical skills but often lack the ability to understand the business drivers, processes and problems and be able to translate these into system specifications. This is the essence of business and systems analysis. Without it you ask for a ruler, you get given a pencil.

  3. Software vendors will rarely say they can’t meet your requirements. This can result in inappropriate customisation of their products and you end up with expensive, unreliable and ineffective solutions. At InfoDriven we have developed a tested method of ensuring the proposed solution will fit the business requirements.
